While my knowledge of my specialist area of procurement is developed through the CIPS course, it is also important to remember that developing my soft skills is just as crucial.

At Gwynedd Council we work to put the people of Gwynedd at the heart of everything we do. But how can we do this in the challenging climate that exists in the public sector these days? Well one way this can be done is to enable staff to get support to develop themselves and reach their potential.

In order to develop my soft skills, I attended two internal training courses this week – mentoring and coaching skills, and giving and receiving constructive feedback.

 


MENTORING AND COACHING SKILLS

 

cymhelliantCoaching and mentoring is recognised as an effective means of improving performance, and as I have experience of both I can certainly vouch for that.

During the training session, we received a presentation to the difference between mentoring and coaching styles, what are the advantages, some of the models that can be used to coach or mentor and what are the important skills to use in coaching.

The session was a great introduction to coaching and mentoring and since I will be starting the ILM Level 7 Certificate in Executive Coaching and Mentoring soon this training was undoubtedly beneficial for me to understand more about coaching others.

 


RECEIVING AND GIVING CONSTRUCTIVE FEEDBACK

Giving and receiving feedback is an important part of any job in order to improve performance and ensure that we are all on the right track. Although I often receive and give feedback, I believe that there is always room for improvement and therefore decided to attend this training to ensure that I give and receive feedback effectively.

It can be said that giving feedback effectively is a skill, and as any with skill practice is needed in order in order to do it properly. Along with having an overview of how to give and receive feedback we also had a valuable opportunity to practice what we learnt through giving and receiving feedback to each other in various scenarios.

 


 

The learning never ends, and I will continue with my personal development next week when I will be attending the ‘The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People’ by Academi Wales!
