Get to know Emily

Hello!

My name is Emily and I have just started as a trainee in the Registration service here in Gwynedd Council as part of the Tomorrow’s Specialists Scheme.

I graduated last summer with a First Class degree in Sociology and Social Policy for 3 years from Bangor University. Although I come from an English-speaking family, the ability to study and work through the medium of Welsh has always been important to me. I received the William Salesbury Scholarship from the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol to study my degree course 100% through the medium of Welsh.

With that in mind, I feel very lucky to live, and now work, in a county where it’s Welshness is a unique feature. The opportunity to be part of a scheme such as the Specialists of Tomorrow Scheme, within my local area, was an opportunity almost impossible to ignore so I jumped at the chance to apply for it. I look forward to giving something back to the community, and serving its residents, who have given me so much over the years.

What is the Registration Service?

As I mentioned at the beginning, I am a Registration trainee. But what exactly does that mean?
To give you some background, the Civil Registration Service in England and Wales has been in existence since 1837… so the service is much older than you and I! Its primary purpose is to create accurate and timely records of all births, deaths, marriages and civil partnerships. So it is likely that many of us will come into contact with this service at some point during our lives.

Does that mean that I will I learn how to conduct a wedding? Quite simply, yes! But that won’t be my only responsibility – I’ll also hold birth and death registration appointments and produce certificates for these appointments. An important part of my role also will be to lead on a project that will transform the service in Gwynedd which will enable residents to access services at more convenient times for them.

Alongside this I will be working towards gaining a qualification in the registration field, which places a strong emphasis on workplace learning. Therefore I’m fairly confident the next two years will be very busy, and I’m almost certain that they will come to an end in the blink of an eye, so I look forward to getting the most out of every second!

I plan to write regular blogs to share and update my experiences over the next two years. So if you want to come along with me on this journey, keep an eye on this website for any updates.

Bye for now!
Emily
